アユタヤ王朝後期の１６世紀末から１７世紀前半頃、中国の明から、白い磁器に多色の上絵を焼き付ける技法が伝えられ、一番初期にタイ国王が職人さんを中国に送りこんで、そこで製造した物を、タイ王室御用達としてタイに輸入したのが始まりです。

初期のベンジャロンは金彩のない色絵磁器（赤絵磁器）で、２００年ほど前のラマ２世の時代に、「ラーイ・ナム・トーン（ラーイは文様、ナムは水、トーンは金を意味するタイ語です）」と言われる金の縁取りしたスタイルが確立し、王室専用の磁器としました。

ベンジャロンは五色を意味するもので、(景徳鎮窯が起源と言われています。日本でも有田焼（伊万里）・九谷焼で有名な「五彩」と同じ、素焼きの後、釉薬を掛けて１３００℃近くの高温で本焼きした白い磁器に、上絵で文様を色付けし、８００℃前後の低温で再度焼き付ける色絵磁器と言われるものです。更には、日本では金襴手と呼ばれる金彩を施したのと同じです。

ベンジャロンは王室御用達から貴族・商人の生活にも浸透していき、タイを代表する高級磁器になりました。タイの三大陶磁器は、ベンジャロン焼き、セラドン焼き、ブルー＆ホワイト（染付或いは青花）ですが、ベンジャロン焼きは、元来が王室専用の製造の歴史もあり、金彩を施し、繊細で緻密な絵付けがされており、圧倒的に豪華且つ高価なものです。


今日、アップしたベンジャロン焼きは金彩こそ無いが、この説明の通り、赤絵磁器を素としたモノです。

Benjarong has permeated the lives of aristocrats and merchants from the purveyor to the royal family, and has become one of Thailand's leading luxury porcelain. The three major ceramics in Thailand are Benjarong-yaki, Celadon-yaki, and Blue & White, but Benjarong-yaki has a history of being originally manufactured exclusively for the royal family, and is decorated with gold to create delicate and detailed paintings.
